How to help my dog with discospondylitis pain and sleep at night?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Redbone Coonhound | Male | 10 years and 10 months old | 96 lbs

My dog was diagnosed with Discospondylitis 3/11/2019. The 1st week we saw some improvements and then he got really bad so he was hospitalized for 2 days a week later. After a week he started getting around more and walking with more easy. This past week has been really bad. He doesn't sleep and is in clear pain and discomfort. The vet said to continue his medication as it is a very painful and takes time to heal. I am wondering if there is anything to help his discomfort & sleep at night.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This can be quite painful and strong pain control medications such as opioids and NSAIDs should be considered. I agree with your veterinarian in that it takes several weeks on antibiotics to resolve. I would recommend that you consider contacting your veterinarian so that they consider prescribing something strong to treat his pain. I really hope he feels better.
