My dog's paw hurts after I removed a splinter. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 6 months old | 18 lbs

I took my dog for the walk, I noticed he did not want to continue, a few seconds later he lifted his right leg up not wanting to put it back on the ground. There was a piece of wood or metal, couldn't really make out what was in there it was so small. I removed it, but he continues to be in discomfort. Any suggestions?

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Remi's care today! Lameness can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. This could be due to this foreign body you described if it caused an injury. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Jasper's care today! Lameness can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. Knowing that the paw is swollen, it could be an injury specific to the paw. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
