My male dog pees inside only when I'm home. Is it marking behavior?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My Male 8yr yorkie has started peeing inside only when we are home. He can hold his pee while we work and overnight. We let him out when we get home he will go pee. He also peed longer for over a few mins. He will come inside n pee inside after 30 mins. Even if we leave the door open so he can go out and pee he will pee inside while he is looking at us. He is unspayed and our female over 1year. He often peed where she has been walking. He is overweight.

This could be marking behavior and related to hormones. It’s also still possible that he has urinary tract disease even though the inappropriate urination is occurring at a specific time. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian so they can check a urine sample. You can also discuss this behavior in more detail and potentially discuss neutering as well.
