Why does my red-eared slider have pink skin and red diarrhea?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Reptile | Aquatic Turtle | Female | 3 years and 3 months old

I have a concern about my female res turtle. I noticed her skin was pink in some areas mostly underside and so I washed her tank and everything else. After feeding her pellet sticks, I noticed this pink/red colored diarrhea flakes in the water. She doesn't appear to be sick, she's eating and she's active. She's being fed reptomin and dried shrimp. Anything I can do to treat this? Is it serious?

Thanks for reaching out about Minnie and including a photo. The pink skin can possibly be a sign of dermal inflammation or infection. A leading cause is poor water quality so a water change was a good idea. Nutritional deficiencies can lead to dermal lesions, specifically vitamin A. The dried shrimp should be considered a snack, with minimal nutritional value. A veterinary visit is recommended to investigate the red/pink flakes from the intestinal tract, if blood then could be serious. Good luck.
