My dog is overweight. What's the best dry food for her diet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 3 months old | 13 lbs

Hello! I left my dog with my mother for about 5-6 months and she brought it back weighting way more... She was feed raw meat and a lot of human food. Now I’m wondering if I should put her on a diet or if her weight is still healthy, and what dry food is the best for her quality wise. She’s a mixed miniature pinscher as far as I know. Thanks! P.S.: she weights about 6-6.5 kgs rn, so like 13-14lbs.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Kira. She does appear overweight based on your pictures. You want her to have only a thin covering over her ribs. They should be easily felt when you pet her side. Then she should have a defined waist from both the top and side views. I recommend using a weight loss formula from Purina ProPlan or Royal Canin. I would stop feeding the raw meat as it not properly balanced for dogs and carries a high risk spreading disease to dogs and people. I hope this information helps!
