My cat is overweight, and my family overfeeds him. What do I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 8 months old

I have a Maine coon/rag doll mix. He’s nearing 4 years old, he’s neutered. I left my home for 3 months, prior to which he already had a weight problem. While I was gone, I begged my family over and over again almost daily not to leave multiple bowls of wet and dry food out for him all day long as I had set a feeding schedule in order to help him lose weight. Nothing has changed. I have to hide and throw away multiple bowls/plates a day. No one will listen. I’m afraid he’ll die. What do I do?

I certainly understand being concerned. Have B seen by a vet. The vet can discuss weight loss methods with you including a prescription weight loss food. Play with him every day to get him moving, and to help him lose weight. You are doing the right thing by getting rid of this extra food, and tell your family you spoke to a vet who said he needs to be at a healthy weight or he will develop serious health problems from being overweight. I hope this helps!
