How to teach my dog the center command for energy and gatherings?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 50 lbs

I want to start teaching Sara this , alongside heel , mainly as a way to help channel energy and to help keep her out from others feet at gatherings. Advice on teaching this? I'm using the comand word 'center' And I know its mainly a military/police function but can you think of any more practical uses?

That may be a tricky one! If you've already taught her to "heel," and you are wanting to add this, then center is fine. Whatever word you pick, just stick with it. Just as teaching the "heel" command, use the same technique. If you've not yet taught her "heel," start with that, as it will be easier for her to catch on, and may be sufficient for the purposes you're looking for. (staying out of the way of others, etc). https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/training/heeling-teach-dog-walk/ Thank you for asking PetCoach! Good luck with Sara!
