My dog's phenobarbital dose missed her mouth. Should I give more?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | 14 years and 2 months old | 18 lbs

18 lb, 14 year old Dachshund. I give my dachshund 0.7 ml twice a day of phenobarbital suspended compound liquid per the Vets orders. This is given by squirting an oral syringe of the liquid in to her mouth. She received her first dose this morning at 5:30 in the morning, but the second dose at 5:30 p.m., missed her mouth and shot onto the carpet. I have no idea how much actually went into her mouth, if any. What do I do?

If you are suspicious that Tootsie did not receive much, if any, of her evening phenobarbital dose, I would consider just giving her an extra half of a dose, or 0.35 ml in this case. However, if there is a chance that she received most of the dose, it would be best to skip this dose and administer her next dose at the normal time.
