My unspayed dog's heat cycle seems off and she's peeing blood?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 11 months old | 50.4 lbs

We adopted a 3 yr old goldendoodle 5 weeks ago. She hasn't been spayed, and we are not familiar with raising females that haven't been. She had symptoms of heat: bleeding, swollen vulva, lots of interest from males about four weeks ago. About two weeks into this cycle it appeared to be over, but about a week and a half ago, she started bleeding again. Her vulva is still somewhat swollen (I think) and she's definitely peeing blood, sometimes in small amounts after peeing clear. Is this normal?

No, this is not normal. You need to take Harper into a vet asap to have this checked out. It could be she has a pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. If she does have a pyometra, spaying her is part of the recommended treatment. Best of luck.
