My dog's chronic anal gland issues: Is it time to say goodbye?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 13 years and 2 months old | 13 lbs

My dogs anal glands ruptured almost 2 years ago.. each time I take him in, they put him on antibiotics. It gets a little better, but soon as meds stop it gets bad again. He smells so bad as a result and licks his anus constantly. Now he seems to be leaking something and his hind end looks awful. He is 13. Is it unreasonable to consider putting him down? My heart hurts but I'm lost.

Chronic anal gland problems can be highly unpleasant to manage. Have you discussed surgical removal of the anal glands with Bear's vet? From your description, it sounds as though he may be a good candidate for this procedure. If surgery is not an option for one reason or another, euthanasia may be an option if Bear's quality of life is declining. I can understand your heartbreak over this situation, but I strongly recommend discussing all options with your veterinarian before making any final decisions.
