My hen is sick: puffed up, not eating. Is she egg-bound or ill?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Chicken | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 10 days old

I have 4 hens, today the most lively of them all has been puffed up, not eating, barely moving and has been on and off sleeping all day. We’ve had history of egg bound hens before and I’m no expert but I’m worried this might be the case again even though I think she’s laid recently. I’ve given her a warm bath and found out using a seringe with olive oil helps. From past experience I’m not sure if she’s eggbound or just ill maybe. I appreciate any help thank you.

Thanks for reaching out about Phil, and a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and help. A egg is often palpable in the lower coelom, near the cloaca (but not always). Using olive oil can be difficult and can cause more damage, so is not recommended. Providing a warm nest area (heat support) and offering oral water can give some energy. Good luck.
