Is licorice root safe for my dog's swollen legs after prednisone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 5 months old | 40 lbs

My dog currently takes Hollistic remedies ( calc c and homotox mixed with things such as ubich, apis, etc. due to autoimmune disease which caused swelling of hind legs. He has been off of prednisone for 2 months and suddenly his hind legs became swollen over night. Is it safe to give him licorice root as an alternative to prednisone?

Licorice root will not harm your dog but it may not prove as effective as the prednisone and/or may not be as effective as it was last time. I think it is safe to try this remedy at home but if you aren’t noticing drastic improvement within 24-48 hours you may want to consider having him rechecked by your veterinarian. I hope this helps. Best of luck with Tyga. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
