Why is my cat's rear end bloody with pus and a sour smell?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Female | spayed | 17 lbs

Over the past few months I’ve noticed my fixed female 5 year old cat has been leaving little brownish red spots on my bedding where she has been sitting. Tonight when I came home I saw that her rear end was covered with what seems to be blood and pus? It doesn’t smell like poo, more like a sour smell. She is acting totally normal and happy and purring. It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on because she has long black fur. Please help!

It could be Harper has ruptured her anal sacs. That would cause the blood and pus, as well as the sour smell. I'd take her into a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is going on with her, and can treat her. Best of luck.
