My senior dog's leg injury: Is her walking progress a good sign?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 15 years old | 62 lbs

My large breed dog is 15 and recently fell, breaking her right tibia and causing inflammation in part of her spinal cord, causing proprioception with the hind left. She is on prednisone and is slowly getting more control over the left. She is able to put the left in the correct position when lowered to the floor and can take a few steps with help. She will then put the left down and stop walking or the left may knuckle over. Does this small improvement show a good outlook, or a plateau?

Neurologic issues can take time. It is great that she is up and bearing weight on her own, dogs are so amazing. Hopefully she had xrays to look for a spinal/pelvic fracture, collapsed disc space, etc. as these would be important to rule out as well. You will need to give her potentially even months to know what her new normal with be. Hopefully she will at some point be deficit free or only have a mild deficit but it is too soon to tell. Keep working with her. Hopefully your vet has recommended a physical therapy/rehab plan for her. If not, you could request referral to a rehab therapist. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
