My cat has hepatic lipidosis and won't eat after surgery. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 9 lbs

Hello, my cat ate a piece of wool a month ago and she had to go through surgery to take it out. However since she got out she's refused to eat solid foods. We are feeding her with hills's paté in a syringe. We've tried to offer poultry, appetite stimulants and different brands of food and nothing. She looks down and pees herself outside the litter box. We ran some tests and she has Feline hepatic lipidosis. We've given her medication for 3 days but we've seen no improvement. What else can we do?

Unfortunately it can take a long time - weeks to months - to recovery from hepatic lipidosis. I typically recommend a feeding tube because feeding the appropriate number of calories is most important and it can be difficult to get enough calories in with syringe feeding alone. If you have other concerns for questions about her care you should check in with your vet and be sure to follow up for all recommended rechecks.
