My dog with heart failure is coughing. Should I increase Furosemide?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male

Hi there, I have a 10 year old Maltese shitszu he quite a while ago was diagnosed with a heart murmur or failure I think, he is currently on heart medication and frusemide to clear fluid from the lungs. He keeps coughing I have taken him to the vet numerous times for it and they have injected him with frusemide. Can I simply just up his frusemide dosage he has 2 a day.

Hello, and thanks for your question. Harry may need an increase in his furosemide dose, or sometimes I will tell owners to give an extra dose occasionally as needed - but it depends on the dog's symptoms, kidney function, and current dose of medication (whether the furosemide can be safely increased from the current dose). Furosemide cannot simply be increased indefinitely, or it can cause kidney problems or overly dehydrate the animal. Harry's normal vet will be the only one able to answer this question, since they know his current dose, weight, and medical history. Hope this helps!
