My dog has a bleeding head bump. How to clean and prevent infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 23 lbs

Diesel went to bed last night with a bump on his head. When I woke up, it looked as if it was bleeding. He does not let me touch it. I cleaned the area, which does not seem to be bleeding anymore. Is there anything I can watch out for or clean it with?

Hello, and thanks for your question about Diesel. You can keep that area clean with mild soap (I often recommend Dawn dish soap) and water, and you can dab a little neosporin on top. However, if it continues to drain discharge and look red and seem painful to him, it may need antibiotics, which means Diesel will need to be seen by the vet. If this might be a bite or scratch from the cat, those wounds are very prone to infection. I wouldn't let it go more than a couple days if it's getting worse rather than better. Hope this helps!
