My dog's severe hot spot won't heal. What should I do now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | unneutered

My dog a really bad hot spot on his back. He won't leave it alone. I've been using the sentry hot spot skin remedy for dogs but it's no longer helping. I'm not sure what else to do.

Poor Dink! That does look like quite a nasty hot spot. For a problem this severe, I would strongly recommend taking him to the vet for treatment. Severe hot spots often need oral antibiotics and steroids to treat effectively. In the meantime, if he's constantly chewing at it and making the problem worse, you can place an e-collar (plastic cone) on him to prevent him from being able to reach it. You should be able to pick one up at your local pet store.
