Feeding my 55lb pit lab mix: How much, how often, and healthy weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 55 lbs

I have a pit lab mix almost 2 years old. I’ve had him since a puppy but I’ve never known exactly how much he should be eating. He eats about 3 cups of food a day and If I put more down he won’t eat but will act like he’s hungry whenever I’m eating. He weighs 55 lbs so I’m just wondering is this a healthy weight? Should I add protein to his diet instead of ONLY dog food? Also how many times a day should he eat and serving sizes? He looks healthy, I just want him to look and feel his best.

Rosco is a very handsome boy! Dog food is fine only for him, and feed him according to the instructions on his bag of food. That will tell you how much to feed him daily. He doesn't need added protein, and I would feed him twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the evening. From the pictures, he looks to be healthy. I hope this helps!
