Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 11 months and 11 days old | 15 lbs
My dog has had diarrhea for 72 hours now. I have reduced his usual meals the last 48 hours and he seemed to have a more solid bowel movement last night. This morning the diarrhea came back and exhibited a little bit of blood within the diarrhea. What should I do to ensure the diarrhea does not get worse and help his digestion of whatever is making him upset? Please help!

Hello, sorry to hear about Benji. There are several causes for this including inflammation of his intestines, an infection with parasites or overgrowth if bacteria, or even a dietary indiscretion. You can try to offer a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and low fat cottage cheese for the next 3-5 days to rest his GI tract. If that does not work fully, you may add fiber to his diet with canned raw pumpkin for a few days. If this also does not work, or if his diarrhea with blood worsens or if he develops other signs such as vomiting, lethargy, and a decreased appetite then Benji should be evaluated by his veterinarian sooner. Hope this helps and best of luck.

This is likely a side effect of the medication, especially the anti-inflammatory one. I would stop the medication and inform your vet of this reaction. The vet will likely want to give something to protect the stomach and prevent an ulcer from forming. The vet also may choose another type of medication altogether if treatment is still needed for Benji. In the meantime, I would suggest giving Benji a probiotic (Culturelle over the counter) to help support the Gi flora. I would also suggest 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in his food daily to help solidify the stools somewhat until you can get him seen by your vet. I hope that Benji's stools normalize soon! Best of luck and take care. : )
