My dog threw up blood and has bloody poop. What should I give her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female

My dog started throwing up last night maybe about three times. The last one was watery. I gave her some water and the vomiting stopped. I took her out to go potty before bedtime and she threw up a little bit again. Then she's fine the whole night. Early in the morning I found a throw up with little blood in it. I took her out, she pooped with blood also. I made sure that she's hydrated. So what should I give her? Thank you

Hi, and thanks for your question. As a first approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. I am definitely concerned about the blood in her vomit. I would offer her small amounts of water throughout the day. If she drinks large amounts she may vomit that as well. Also I would offer her a small amount of plain boiled chicken (no bones) and rice to help settle her stomach. If she isn't improving or getting worse then I would definitely take her to your vet for an exam. Your vet will be able to do some blood work and even a fecal or abdominal X-rays if needed to see what medications would be best for her at this time. They will also be able to determine if she is dehydrated. I hope this helps!
