My cat might have diabetes. Should I see a vet before changing diet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6.4 lbs

I think my cat has diabetes. I've done some research online suggesting I first changes his diet to high protein, low carb. What other steps should I take, should I take him in to the vet?

Hello, and thanks for your question about Bean. Yes, absolutely Bean needs to be seen by the vet before you make any other changes. I'm guessing you're seeing an increase in urination and thirst, which are the most common symptoms noticed with diabetic cats. However, these can also be symptoms of other metabolic diseases, such as kidney disease. It's important to know Bean's diagnosis, in order to start the appropriate treatment. Additionally, if Bean is diabetic he will need to start insulin, as well as change his diet. Your vet will likely recommend evaluating a urine and blood sample to better evaluate what's going on with Bean. Hope this helps!
