Why does my dog keep peeing blood after clear X-rays and meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 5 months old | 18 lbs

I took my dog to the vet for blood in the urine twice. The second time they did X-rays on him and did not find anything, so they gave him another prescription of antibiotics and they worked for about two weeks and again he starts to urinate blood and sometimes just blood comes out.

Hello, sorry to hear about Buddy. There are multiple causes of this and may include bladder stones that are not evident on x-rays, a resistant urinary tract infection, an enlarged prostrate, a prostate abscess, and less likely a bladder tumor. To further diagnose why he continues to have intermittent blood in his urine, he may need to have more diagnostics such as an abdominal ultrasound and a urine culture. You may speak with your veterinarian about these next further diagnostics. Hope this helps ad best of luck.
