Why are my newborn kittens fighting? Are they getting enough milk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Female | 3 years and 3 months old | 2.5 lbs

My cat had 4 cats two days ago. They seem to be fighting a lot or not having enough nipples to feed from. I try to make them share but it’s not working and I’m afraid I shouldn’t be handling them too much but I’m scared they aren’t nursing enough. Is it okay for them to be fighting a lot?

If by fighting you mean they are pushing each other out of the way this is normal behavior. A cat has 8 mammary glands so there should be enough room for everyone but sometimes the mother doesn’t make enough milk. The best way to determine whether or not the kittens are getting enough milk is to weigh them each daily using a gram scale. They should gain about 100 grams per week and should be gaining every day.
