My guinea pig has runny poop. What are the causes and what can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 3 months old | 1.8 lbs

My guinea pig has runny poo. It started out soft but progressively has gotten worse. I took him off of fresh veggies, and (as always) provided him with a constant supply of Timothy hay and water. As this did not help, I began to give him a pro biotic (one of my healthy piggie' s poo mixed with water). This caused no change. I started to give him critical care, and am continuing that as I do not want him to lose weight. He is also on the small mammals version of Bene-Bac Plus. He is 4 1/2 years.

Thanks for reaching out about Squish and including a photo. Soft stool or diarrhea in guinea pigs have many causes other than bacterial or dietary. Metabolic problems such as liver or kidney disease, bladder stones, urinary tract infections, bacterial or parasitic enteritis, dental disease, just to name a few. A veterinary visit and examination could really help you with diagnostic and treatment plans. Maintaining hydration and nutrition are very important, as you are already working on. Good luck.
