Is starving sick puppies for 5-8 days safe for their health?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 25 days old | 3 lbs

we are in Laos. our vet has advised to "starve" our sick litter of puppies that have vomiting and diarrhoea of food and water for 5 to 8 days while giving them saline once a day. 3 puppies have now died and the 4th after 5 days is very skinny and weak. I suspect the cure maybe kill or cure. Is this right ? thank you john

Hi John. I'm so sorry about your puppies! I personally do not recommend starving young puppies for that long; at most, I recommend 6-12 hours based on the age. I think 5-8 days is way too long. You need to take them into another vet immediately for a second opinion.
