My dog coughs, gags, and struggles to breathe. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Papillon | Male | neutered | 9 years and 3 months old | 9 lbs

My dog coughs and acts like he wants to vomit. I’ve spent 100$s and they don’t have any answer but cough syrup. He does not have heart worms. He did once but we cured him and X-rays show it. They say I need to go to a specialist. He sounds like sand when breathing sometimes. He huffs and puffs with little excitement. What to do?

I think it may be time to consider a specialist. I'm not sure if the vet has done a recent x-ray of Mumchie's chest, but I would be concerned his symptoms could be due to heart disease. That can be common in older dogs. Seeing a specialist may give you some answers. Best of luck.
