Cat having kittens, blood sac, no contractions. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 5.8 lbs

The young cat I rescued (aprox 8 months) is having kittens. She had 2 with no apparent issues but now there is a blood sac protruding from her vagina. It’s been about 20 minutes with no contractions. She is purring and resting while kittens eat.

Hello. There may not be any problems. This might be the placenta from one of the first kittens, or the beginning of the 3rd birth. As long as she seems content & is caring for the newborns, I would just give her more time. If the sack has not passed by tomorrow, try to have Diora seen by your vet tomorrow. The tissue may just need to be gently removed, but more importantly, we want to be sure there are no more kittens. A simple x-ray will disclose this. Hope all is well soon.
