My dog whines when mom leaves. How to ease his separation anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | neutered | 10 years and 3 months old | 25 lbs

Hi! Since a year or so my dog has developed separation anxiety regarding my mom. Every time she leaves he whines and is restless. She’s gonna be gone for a couple of days. Is there anything I can do for him to make him more comfortable? Any medication or exercise that will get him to relax?

Be sure to get him plenty of exercise while he is gone; walks are great. You can talk to your vet about temporarily trying a medication such as fluoxetine or even trazadone to help ease his anxiety. You can try a calming treat such as Composure. I'm not sure if you can get this in India, but it is a good product and no prescription is needed. Thank you for asking PetCoach!
