My mini Aussie puppy ate Heartgard. Is ivermectin safe for Aussies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 24 days old | 17.2 lbs

I’m concerned about my mini Aussie, he is roughly 17.2 pounds and 12 weeks old. My vet is currently closed but he ingested a puppy heartgard, roughly 68mcg ivermectin and I’m concerned since Aussie’s can become very will due to the toxicity. Is this going to affect him? He ingested it around 7am this morning and I’ve been watching him closely and have not seen anything strange in his behavior. I’m just worried, is he going to be okay? How long until that ivermectin leaves his system?

Hi there. 68 mcg is the normal dose of Heartgard for a puppy up to 25 pounds, so Beau should be just fine :) Even if he is MDR1 positive (the gene that makes some dogs more sensitive to ivermectin), normal Heartgard doses are still completely safe for these dogs. They can have difficulty with higher ivermectin doses that are sometimes used to treat certain types of mange and other problems, so we do have to be careful with this type of treatment in herding breeds - but regular Heartgard is such a low dose that it's still perfectly safe.
