My dog's upper lip is red. What's causing it and how to help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 24.7 lbs

My dog has recently developed (~8-10 days) a redness on his upper lip between the nose and lip area. No recent diet changes, he is on monthly oral meds for fleas/ticks. It doesn’t appear to be swollen. He was on Apoquel for 3 days last week due to itching/chewing his paws and forelegs but has been off that for 3 days — we attributed the itchiness to seasonal allergens. What could be causing this, and how can I try to help him?

This redness could be related to seasonal allergies as well, and it's possible that Dakota has a secondary skin infection. Mites or even fungal disease could cause symptoms like this as well. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian to see if they think antibiotics or other medications may be necessary.
