My dog hates car rides. Should I give him a sedative for travel?

I have never experienced anything like this before. Our Terrier HATES riding in our car. We want to travel, would a seditive or something like it help? Thanks, Bill. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 13.5 lbs
