My cat has lymphoma. What are treatment options and quality of life?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 years and 8 months old | 11.5 lbs

Hi trix Has had IBD for a few yrs & a lack of appetite the last couple months. After vet found nothing abnormal in bloodwork but elevated folate we did an intestinal biopsy & found she has sm cell lymphoma in 2 areas of her small intestine. She says it’s not high grade & slow progressing. I’m to see an oncologist today. She says it’s treatable, a chemo drug possibly, a tablet every 2 wks of Lucaran? What is treatment? Will she have good quality of life? I’m devastated. Thank you

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Trixie. I am sorry to hear about her recent diagnosis. Unfortunately, gastrointestinal lymphoma can be a longterm consequence of inflammatory bowel disease in cats. I am glad that will consult with an oncologist. There are actually a variety of treatment protocols, some of which can be oral tablets given at home. Cats tend to tolerate chemotherapy really well. They do not usually lose hair like human cancer patients will. There can be some nausea, but this is generally mild and there are good medications to control it. The main side effects tend to be white blood cell suppression. For this reason, her blood work will be monitored carefully. I hope this information helps!
