My dog had distemper. What causes this disease with sleep issues?

I have a question my dog has been send to a vet before that was maybe 3 years ago. She was violently kicking and barking in her sleep. Also her head is beating. We dont know why did it hapoen but she is a survivor now. The vet said it was a distemper. What maybe caused that? Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 4 years and 3 months old | 23 lbs
