My 9-week-old puppy threw up after eating grass. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | unneutered | 12 lbs

Hi, my 9 week old golden doodle puppy last night ate grass. He seemed sick and tired so we put him to bed afterwards. In the middle of the night I got up to check on him next to me and he threw up. He seemed more energetic and better afterwards. When we got up in the morning to let him out he threw up a little bit of liquid but seemed back to normal after doing this. Just wanted an opinion on it before our appointment at the vet from elsewhere also.

There could be many things that are causing this in Loki. Less likely a foreign body especially since he bounces back right after vomiting. It can be viral related or just a gastrointestinal upset. We always are concerned about Parvo in an unvaccinated puppy since he is only 9 weeks but this is less likely if he is energetic and has no diarrhea. He can always have intestinal parasites especially in a young puppy. I would recommend a stool check, deworming, a bland diet and an antacid as long as everything else is ok. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Harvey. Poor boy. He could have something like a GI illness causing his vomiting. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!
