Why is my cat breathing fast, panting, drooling, and not eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Himalayan | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 9 days old | 9.8 lbs

My himalayan cat, aged 7 months, breathes rapidly and sometimes breathe with his mouth open. I noticed this recently. Also, he's been eating less for about a week now, starting after we brought him in to the local vet. Last night, he drooled foamy liquid and it was too late to bring him to the vet. Should I be worried? And what can I do to help him breathe?

Poor Owi! Yes, from your description here I would definitely be concerned. It's not normal for cats to "pant" or breathe with their mouth open, and breathing more rapidly than normal is often a sign that something is wrong with the lungs or heart. Eating less and drooling are also signs that he isn't feeling well for some reason. I would strongly recommend taking Owi back to the vet for an exam. Your veterinarian can listen to his heart and lungs, and will likely recommend chest x-rays as a starting to help determine what might be wrong.
