My rat has a bump near its eye. Is it a tumor? When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Male | unneutered | 0.8 lbs

My REW rat has a large bump that's grown next to his eye, and i'm not sure if its a tumor or just a fatty cyst, and if it is a tumor I don't know if its terminal. Hes still fairly active and eating well, and doesn't seem to be in pain. Should i be worried? how do i tell exactly what it is??

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Gilrat. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. A procedure known as a fine needle aspirate is typically performed when a pet has a mass present. A small needle is used to collect a sample of cells to evaluate under the microscope. This allows the doctor to tell you the type of mass and if treatment is required for him. I hope this information helps!
