My dog drinks another dog's pee. Should I worry about Tramadol?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, I have one dog that is one tramadol 50 mg (around 70 pounds). My 11 pound Pomchi will drink her pee when they’re outside. I know this is a weird question, but is it possible he is ingesting any tramadol? I’ve read that it is hard to get dogs to stop this habit so I’m concerned. On an unrelated note, the Pomchi went to the vet, who said he was displaying early signs of hip dysplasia. I’m going to do an X-ray when I have more money but should he be on pain pills?

Tramadol is metabolized in the liver and its metabolites are excreted in the urine. it is unlikely the smaller dog will be harmed by any tramadol in the urine. greater concern is the drinking of the urine itself. This may lead to stomach upset. Restrict access to dog wastes and provide plenty of fresh water. If the smaller dog seems excessively thirsty, a work up with your veterinarian is recommended. Unless he or she is exhibiting discomfort associated with the hip dysplasia, pain medication is likely not indicated. A joint supplement, weight control and regular exercise would be beneficial.
