My dog's unvaccinated. Will I get in trouble taking her to vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 8 lbs

My dog is a 4 year old mixed breed chihuahua. She was gifted to me by a friend when I turned 15 years old, I was told she was vaccinated but I have no documented proof. 4 years later I am wondering if I do take her to a vet and turns out she hasn’t been vaccinated, Will I face legal trouble? I am trying to be the best pet owner I can be however I am afraid.

No you will not face legal trouble at all. What the vet will do is examine your girl and make recommedations for her health. They can discuss which vaccines will keep her safe and healthy, which will likely be distemper parvo and rabies. It will also likely be recommended to check for heartworms and GI parasites if she is not on a preventative. And if heartworm negative consider starting a preventative. As she is unspayed they will also likely discuss this with you and what to monitor for in the future if not spayed. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
