My vet has prescribed the liquid form of phenobarbital for my dog seizures. My dog suffers from focalized seizures. Is it okay to give my dog phenobarbital every 8 hours instead of 12?

No. Phenobarbital needs to maintain specific blood levels and the half life of the medication is 12 hours. That’s why it is dosed at that interval. You must also be careful not to over dose the medication. If you have having trouble with control of Tootsie’s seizures, I recommend to call your veterinarian. There are other medications that can be given in combination with or in substitution for phenobarbital. Follow the instructions on the label with this medication. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

It may take a few days, but you can certainly get Tootsie on a 6am/6pm schedule. Try moving her dose about 1 hour earlier each day until you reach your desired schedule. With twice daily medications, it is ideal to continue giving the doses 12 hours apart, but in reality, giving a dose 10-13 hours apart is also completely reasonable. I hope this helps and that all goes well for Tootsie!
