Did feeding my puppy less than recommended harm his growth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 16 days old | 20 lbs

I have a German sheaperd and I got him when he was 2 months old he is now 3 months and 3 weeks. I feed him the best puppy food I can get, but I read the charts wrong and up until yesterday I have been feeding him around 2 cups to 3 cups of food. I read online I should be feeding him around 3 2/3 to 4 cups a day. Did I harm his growth? And he doesn't look like he is mal nourished he has been to the vet and the vetrnarian didn't say anything.

No, I don't think you did him any harm. Those charts are just guidelines - not all puppies fit into those recommendations. Overfeeding is worse than underfeeding so I would not worry about it as long as he is looking well. I don't know what food you are feeding but you should be feeding a Large Breed puppy food - that will give him the best chance at optimal growth. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
