Why is my dog's fur on his back growing back brown and straight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Male | 5 years and 5 months old | 20 lbs

My apricot minature poodle has developed brown spots on his back. The hair growing back in is dark brown and straight, not like the rest of his hair. Any information will be appreciated.

Dogs can experience changes in the color and consistency of the hair coat for a huge number of reasons. It is important to determine if Trey is itchy, losing hair, and developing redness or scaling of his skin, as these can all raise or lower suspicions of some conditions. Possible causes include hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, mange, bacterial and/or fungal skin infections, sebaceous adenitis, nutritional changes, or many other conditions. While this is certainly not an emergency, I recommend discussing Trey's coat changes with his veterinarian, as he may need some diagnostic testing to get to the bottom of the situation. I hope that all goes well!
