My pet is in pain. Do vets always offer pain meds, or should I ask?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 12 years and 3 months old | 38 lbs

Do most veterinarians not prescribe pain meds and if not why? We had an appointment to put our dog with lung cancer down. He could no longer get out of his dog house on his own and did not want to walk. In desperation, my husband half an Aleve. In thirty minutes, he was walking, playing with the other two dogs, much improved. We immediately got pain meds from his veterinarian to give him with his other meds. We had a similar experience with a bunny. Do we have to ask for pain meds?

I'm sorry that you've had this experience. Your veterinarian should definitely offer pain medication as an option anytime your pet seems painful or uncomfortable. If your feel that your current veterinarian isn't very proactive about this, you may want to look for a different vet who is. And you can always ask about pain medication as an option, if you think your pet is uncomfortable or having a hard time getting around.
