My Saint Bernard is panting and drooling after walk. Is it heatstroke?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Saint Bernard | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 115 lbs

He is a one year old Saint Bernard. We got home from a long walk about 20 minutes ago, but he is still panting and drooling heavily. Is this a heatstroke or is it normal?

It’s hard to know if that’s heatstroke without knowing how hot it is outside, how heavy his activity was and what his temperature is. You can take a dogs temperature at home with a 10 second digital thermometer and lubricant. A dog’s normal temperature is between 99 to 102.5°F. If this is not usual behavior after a walk, I recommend to have him seen by the veterinarian quickly. Heat stroke, torsion or toxin ingestion could all present like this. It’s best to be safe. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
