Should I worry if my dog breathes from his stomach when resting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Male | neutered | 9 years and 8 months old | 14.7 lbs

Hello, my dachshund has been seen twice by vets both dx with allergies and bronchitis. He's eating, playing but when he lays breathing he breathes from his stomach upward. Is this normal??

As long as his breathing rate is not elevated, partial abdominal breathing is not always something to worry about, it depends of course on other factors such as if he is lethargic or not, if his appetite is normal and if there is an obvious weight loss over a relatively short period of time.
