How soon can my dog walk after lump removal surgery on his hind leg?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | 7 years and 11 months old

Hi! Cruz had a small lump removed from his hind leg yesterday morning, between the hock and foot (see attached pic for the area). He has 2 staples. I was wondering if he could continue with his usual leashed walks today. We normally do an hour in the morning and another 45 minutes in the evening...or should I give him some time off?

You should definitely give him some time off. Usually 7 days is recommended. Even though the incision is not in a high motion area ( like over a joint) the walking will delay healing by causing separation of the wound edges. Great question! Hope this helps. Best wishes.
