Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old
My 1-year-old parakeet has laid an egg. Previously, she's laid two clutches of about 4-5 eggs, with two chicks hatching from the second but only one about 3 months old today. I read somewhere that letting a third clutch be raised might have the female die from exhaustion, but she was largely negligent towards the first clutch. What should I do?

Thanks for reaching out about Sky. Don't think exhaustion has to do with third clutch but nutritional status and health of hen. If laying lots of eggs, diet needs to consist of more than seed, must include vegetables and a protein source. If trying to stop egg laying, all nesting material needs to be removed, and separated from male. Altering the photoperiod could be helpful. A veterinary visit is recommended to help. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Sweety. It is very difficult to prevent egg laying in your situation, even with hormones. A well rounded, healthy diet is most important, to replace nutrients lost in egg production, especially eggs. Pellets, green vegetables, a vegetable protein source are very important. Photo period manipulation, removal of nesting sites/materials can help reduce egg production. Good luck.
