My cat is in pain with matted fur near his tail. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 9 days old

My cat seems to be in pain but I don’t know what to do. He has some matted fur by his tail/back leg that looks like he’s been licking it but when I try to touch it he cries. He won’t move very far and when he walks he’s slow and when he’s picked up, he cries and cries. He turns a year old this month. Please help

Poor Oliver! It definitely sounds like something is wrong. He may have a wound or skin condition in this area causing it to be sore. I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam. He/she can clip the hair away from the area to get a better look at what's going on, and get him started on appropriate medication to treat the problem.
