My dog has watery diarrhea after eating outside. Is it parasites?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 7 years and 10 months old | 10 lbs

I think my dog has picked up a parasite. Very watery bowel movements. No change in diet. She seems fine other than the very loose stools. She is eating and drinking as usual. My dog tends to eat things outside. I keep on a short leash but she will eat anything outdoors. Any suggestions?

Hi there. If you think that Maggie May might have picked up a parasite, you could take a fecal sample to your vet's office and have it checked. Alternatively, you could try deworming her with a good broad-spectrum dewormer like Panacur or Strongid to see if the diarrhea resolves. If there is no improvement within 2-3 days of giving the dewormer, or if she develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, acting lethargic, or not wanting to eat, then she should be seen by a veterinarian to find out what's wrong.
