My dog has bloody stool and clots. Is this normal? What are recovery signs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Female | 4 months and 16 days old | 22 lbs

My dog is having Gastroenteritis since 5 days. Vet said she'll start recovering after 3 days. She's on RL, DNS and Metronizadole IV fluids right now. Also I give PENTAPROZOLE IV, CEPHRIAXONE TAZOBACTUM IV, ONDEM IV since 5 days and still giving. 2 days before she had yellow liquid stool. Later it's colour changed to Brownish Yellow (Similar to Betadine colour) and now since yesterday she's having bloody stool with blood clots in it... Is it normal? What are the recovery signs?

I am so sorry to hear that your pet Bambi experiencing some severe signs of colitis. It sounds like your poop pup has maybe contracted parvovirus. If your vet has not already tested for this then they should. If she does have parvovirus, then this would explain why her symptoms are so severe and why she hasn't recovered as easily. In fact, parvovirus pets have about an 80% survival rate if treated in the hospital, and less than 60% survival rate if treated at home. It sounds like your vet is treating with everything possible and hoping that Bambi turns around. Here is some more information on this condition in pets so that you know what to expect https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951463 IF she does not have parovivurs, then I would highly recommend having x-rays done of her belly to look for evidence of a foreign body, as well as bloodwork analysis to get a good overall picture of her current health status. Best wishes with your pet Bambi moving forward and I hope that she is able to make a full and speedy recovery soon! Take care.
